Chiropractic & Pregnancy - Baby Positioning

Sitting in car seats and leaning back on comfortable sofas together with less physical exercises, are possibly a reason for increase in difficult labour.

Things to do to encourage good baby positing:

  • Don't sit cross legged, this decreases the space in the front of the pelvis and pushes the baby backwards.
  • Don't put your feet up! Lying back with your feet up should be avoided. Knees should never be higher that the hips. This encourages the baby to move to the back of the pelvis.
  • Sleep on your side, not your back.
Swimming is a great exercise. It keeps you fit and helps encourage good positioning. Lots of front crawl but avoid twisting from the hips too much. Breast stroke should be avoided (it is possible that the pelvis is unstable due to hormonal changes and breaststroke will aggravate pelvic stability). I suggesting holding a kicker board and swimming with the head in the water and kicking the legs behind.
  • Spend lots of time kneeling or leaning forwards. Exercises balls are fantastic for this. Kneeling forwards or sit leaning forwards onto a ball.
  • When in a car have the seat upright and tilt the pelvis forwards using a wedge cushion.

Exercises balls to suit your height and car seat pregnancy wedges can be order from the centre.
