Chiropractic & Pregnancy

Health benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy and reasons why Moms should receive Chiropractic check- ups when they fall pregnant.

  • Studies show that over 50% of all women suffer from lower back pain during pregnancy, with the sacra iliac joint being the most affected area.
  • Chiropractic care has shown to significantly reduce labour time for women who receive care during their pregnancy (First time moms averaged a 24% shorter and experienced moms, 39% average decreased labour time).
  • Research shows that correct alignment of the pelvis and spine contribute to a more straight forwards labour with less pain and trauma for mother and baby.
  • Chiropractic care is safe for both mother and baby. We should always try and keep pregnancy natural, with every medical treatment there are risks and many of those risks are not known at the time.

Many difficult births result from malpositioning of the baby’s head. This usually results in long and painful labour and the use of medical intervention. Sacro –Occipital chiropractic care during pregnancy is a gentle and safe way to help encourage correct baby positioning. Various adjustments realign the pelvis so that the uterus is aligned, muscles and ligament are relaxed and more space for movement is created.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is a safe and natural way to help with the symptoms associated with pregnancy. Back ache, pubic symphysis discomfort, sciatica, headaches, morning sickness, and many other aches and pains associated with pregnancy respond favourably to chiropractic care.

"Carrying around 8 and half months worth of baby is hard enough, but when your back gives out, it's a nightmare. I heard about Shaana from another mum-to-be and went along in the hopes that she might be able to help as taking strong painkillers simply wasn't an option. Although it took a couple of sessions and some targeted exercising (specified by Shaana) on my part, the result was in one word - magic. Back great, baby lined up ready for action. Oliver arrived after a 12 hour labour (four or five hours of which I slept through) and was born in the water pool at the RUH with just some gas and air for the last hour and a half or so.

"After getting used to being a new mum and after seeing our GP for our six week check, I decided it would be good to go back to Shaana. Lots of time spent breastfeeding and carrying a growing boy, plus muscles weakened from pregnancy meant that my back and neck were starting to suffer. I also thought it would be good to see if Shaana could help Ollie, as he wasn't keen to look to the left and had lots of wind. Gentle and deft, I was happy to let Shaana treat Ollie, and the results of her treatment were impressive. The evening after his first session he fell asleep looking to the left all by himself - no rocking or singing required! Since then we've had lots of smiles and he is generally a happier little boy. As for me, I've been lined up again and given more homework exercises and I'm feeling better every day."

‘My midwife was amazed at how smooth and comfortable my labor was, thank you Shaana, I have a wonderful healthy 9 pound baby boy’

‘I have benefited hugely from regular chiropractic treatment over the last 2 years to treat migraine and neck and shoulder problems, and so I was very pleased to be able to continue my treatments whilst pregnant. Not only this, but it was very reassuring to know that both my baby and I were benefiting from specific adjustments I received which were aimed at aiding the baby's position in the womb and subsequent birth. I had not anticipated that I could have an easy pregnancy and yet I flew through it virtually back/shoulder pain free!
